Oral Care Routine: Simple Steps for Healthy Teeth and Gums
My obsession with building the best oral care routine started when I realized that healthy, natural teeth are the key to looking youthful. There’s something about a clean, bright smile that can’t be faked with veneers or whitening strips.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed changes in my gum health and tooth sensitivity—and that’s only fueled my commitment to maintaining good oral health. I’ve never had a cavity (knock on wood), and honestly, the idea of a needle in the mouth has me terrified. So, I’ve made it a hobby out of an anxiety (lol) and out of it came my ultimate oral hygiene routine, based on research, trial and error, and finding the oral hygiene products that actually work for me.
If you’re curious about how to build your own teeth hygiene routine, want to know if you should brush or floss first, or just need tips for healthy teeth and gums, you’re in the right place. Below is my exact daily oral care routine—step by step, with the products I use and love.
Why Is Oral Hygiene Important?
Before we dive into the steps, let’s talk about the importance of oral hygiene in daily life. Your mouth is the gateway to your entire body, and what happens in there affects everything from digestion to inflammation. Practicing good oral care hygiene helps prevent cavities, bad breath, gum disease, and even supports your overall health.

My Daily Oral Care Routine
These are the oral hygiene steps I follow every single day. This routine is what I’ve found works best for healthy teeth, balanced gums, and a clean, fresh mouth.
1. Oil Pulling
- Done first thing in the morning. I do this before brushing, drinking, or eating to catch the most bacteria.
- A natural way to detox the mouth and support gum health.
- Swish with coconut oil for 5–20 minutes (start with 5 if you’re new).
- We keep a jar of coconut oil on a bathroom shelf for easy access.
2. Brush (AM)
- I use the Laifen Wave electric toothbrush—after testing Quip, Oral B, and a few random ones, this was the winner.
- It has 3 brush heads (Gum Care, Super-Clean, Ultra-Whitening), charges in 2.5 hours, and lasts 45 days.
- Best AM toothpaste: Boka Fluoride Free Toothpaste Nano Hydroxyapatite
3. Floss (AM)
- I love CocoFloss—eco-friendly and classic.
- String floss expands better between the teeth vs. floss sticks.
- I don’t always floss (AM) and water floss (PM) on the same day—I switch it up.
4. Mouthwash (After Eating)
- Optional, but great after lunch or if I need a quick refresh post food.
- Biorepair Mouth Wash
5. Water Floss (PM)
- This is where I go in with my water flosser for a deeper clean.
- Helps clear out any debris and supports gum health.
- Floss before brushing for an even deeper clean.
- The WaterFloss I Use
6. Brush (PM)
- Best PM Toothpaste: Biorepair Paste Oralcare Intensive Night Repair
- Made in Italy and formulated to remineralize teeth while you sleep.
7. Mouthwash (PM)
- After dinner or right before bed, I go in with one of these:
- ioRinse Mouthwash (antibacterial)
8. Oral Probiotic (PM)
- My final step before bed.
- Helps balance the oral microbiome and reduce bad bacteria.
- NOW Oral Probiotic
Extra Steps in My Oral Care Hygiene
Mouth Tape (Nightly)
- Helps promote nasal breathing and supports better sleep.
- Reduces dry mouth and bad morning breath.
Mewing
- Supports facial posture and jaw development.
- Subtle but effective over time!
- Make sure you’re mewing correctly to avoid causing teeth to shift
Travel Mouthwash
- I always keep mouthwash tablets on hand for flights, car trips, or long days.
Tips for Healthy Teeth and Gums

- Learn how to brush your teeth correctly—gentle circles, not aggressive scrubbing.
- Don’t skip flossing, even if it’s just a few times a week.
- Think beyond brushing—mouthwash, probiotics, and breathing habits matter.
