Neighborhoods We Would Skip
We recommend staying outside of the areas directly surrounding Fisherman’s Wharf and Union Square. They can feel crowded, busy, and overly touristy which takes away from the slow travel experience. They are easy enough to visit without staying in them.
We travel in a slow, lived-in way. Walking everywhere, finding the best coffee shops, stopping into local markets, and spending most of our time in neighborhoods instead of tourist zones.
We stayed in these San Francisco areas ourselves and paid attention to the small things that make a trip feel calm and easy. This guide is based on what we look for when we travel: walkability, good food, neighborhood parks, and a place that feels like home for a few days.
